What is SimilarWeb?

Similarweb is a tool for estimating and analyzing the traffic of websites. It is a way of viewing any website traffic, allowing you to check your highest website traffic or competitors. The SimilarWeb features are divided into eight sections, including:

  • Overview check website traffic
  • Referral sources
  • Access from search engines
  • Traffic from social networks
  • Display advertising
  • Analyze user behavior
  • Similar websites
  • Related applications

How are Similarweb Features?

SimilarWeb though, is not 100% accurate. But it is a way of viewing any website traffic, giving you the ability to view your competitors’ traffic sources. That’s what anyone doing SEO or content marketing wants to know.

It is also a way for you to know who is the leader in your industry. Thereby, they evaluate their stature and your position. Examples of two famous electronics retailers in Vietnam are “FPTShop” and “Phong Vu”:

You can use Similarweb to analyze websites. To see which referral sources are the most important among your competitors or yours.

If you upgrade to Similarweb Pro, you will have access to a wide range of features, including device distribution, audience information, and traffic sharing from various social media networks.

Features of SimilarWeb key

Traffic Overview

You can find this SimilarWeb feature under “Traffic Overview.” This only one item, it is already useful, is a way to view any website traffic.

Start by going to similarweb.com and entering any URL into the search box. (Tip: You can also view SimilarWeb data for whatever Website you are visiting. With just one click by setting up a custom bookmarklet or installing a SimilarWeb Chrome extension. Useful if you do a lot of competitive analysis).

Here’s what to notice in this section.

Total Visits (Total Visits)

“Total Visits” chart is a feature of SimilarWeb. It is the way to view any website traffic. They were received in the past month. And a trend line of that website traffic over the past six months.

It lets you know how many visits another website gets each month. But it only has relatively accurate accuracy for measuring traffic levels between websites. (Like Alexa rankings)

For example, I looked at the traffic statistics for the pages of “FPTShop” and “Phong Vu,.”

As you can see, “FPTShop” has a higher monthly traffic volume than “Phong Vu”. However, duration, number of pages clicked per the traffic, and the percentage bounce from “Phong Vũ” is better than “FPTShop”. Although there is nothing to confirm, these figures are accurate. But according to experienced marketers, this metric is pretty reliable based on estimates.

Why is this data useful?

When you are entering a new market, or you have just targeted an unfamiliar customer segment. This report will tell you where you are standing and what to do.

Without Similarweb reporting data, you will be missing information.

Source access from countries (Traffic by countries)

With this data, you know the percentage of Website visits coming from which country and what proportion of them. Please see the data of “Phong Vu”:

As you can see, the number of visitors from Vietnam accounts for 98.45%. This is completely obvious. You cannot claim that a dealer selling electronics in Vietnam must have traffic from another country. Unless “Phong Vu” has the intention of expanding the market.

Traffic Sources

The “Traffic Sources” chart is probably the critical point of this section.

It shows a website’s traffic coming from each of these channels: Direct, Ref, Search, Social, Email, and Display Ads. This is beneficial information that you can use to determine where you should focus on your content marketing efforts.

The above chart of “Phong Vũ” shows that the search engine’s traffic is relatively high. Thereby, we can deduce they are doing an excellent SEO job. That way, you may know to better focus on SEO if you compete with them.

Another approach is to look at the channels that competitors are ignoring. Then double on that channel.

Referrals

This is how to see any website traffic coming from any referral source. You see SimilarWeb’s feature in the “Referrals” section.

Referral traffic means any ad-free traffic comes from other websites, not from search engines or social networks.

Top referring sites (Top referring sites)

This section will check website traffic for your top 5 referring websites (or more if you upgrade to the Pro version of SimilarWeb). Include the percentage of traffic from each page. For example, the about page that accounts for the highest proportion of “Phong Vũ” is next.voz.vn

Top destination sites

In contrast to “Access Sources”, these are the pages that users leave your site to enter. Like your Fanpage on Facebook or a partner page that you want to recommend to users.

Traffic from search engines, social networks, and display advertising

Search engines, social media, and display advertising are the most significant traffic sources most websites have.

Search engine (Search).

This section will show you the top keywords that you get more traffic from its results.

Top 5 organic keywords: five keywords with organic results that click to “Phong Vu” for free.

Top 5 paid keywords: are five keywords that “Phong Vu” has results to go to their page but have to pay.

Social network (Social)
The sources of social media traffic are also platform-specific. So you can see which platforms work best for your Website.

You can look at this metric and see which platforms are inefficient and what potential venues the competitor has left out that you can develop. Thereby defeat them.

Display Advertising

This report shows you the top online newspapers. As well as page ads are being used for paid display advertising and PPC if any.

One thing to note here is that SimilarWeb does not currently have access to Facebook ad traffic data.

Analyzing audience behavior (Audience Interests)

Here is the SimilarWeb feature that shows you:

  • Related categories
  • Sites are in the category
  • Suggested word (word cloud)

Categories

You can view the interest categories they have, based on their activity outside of the web.

Why is this useful for content marketing?

The cornerstone of any content strategy is to create content that will appeal to the majority of your target audience. And this report gives you an overview of the categories they may be interested in.

Also, visit the Website.

It checks website traffic, letting you know which websites people visit your site most often.

For example: If you view this report for phongvu.com. You can see that their users tend to spend a lot of time on anphatpc.com, hanoicomputer.com, gearvn.com, …

You can rate these sites. That way, you get to know relevant pages that you might want to collaborate with, advertise, or are your competitors.

Word Cloud or related word (Word Cloud)

Finally, this section covers a cloud from topics that Similarweb thinks is most relevant to website visitors.

Don’t expect accuracy here. It is just for you to reference and enrich the keywords you can target. This word list also shows you the words that websites in the relevant category are targeting.

Competitors and similar sites

This SimilarWeb feature is a quick way to know who your opponents are. Let’s see the ten opponents of “Phong Vũ” displayed
This list is entirely accurate. These are websites that operate in the retail electronics sector and seeing who your competitors are is helpful. But how do you make use of this information? You can see what your industry leaders are doing to learn. As well as the shortcomings of other competitors to take advantage of to make a difference.

You can also use this report to find guest information or other partnership opportunities. In some circumstances, they may not be our direct opponents—so a chance to cooperate as absolutely possible.

This section shows your mobile apps as well as your competitors, with ratings and reviews.

SimilarWeb Disadvantages

Although many users highly appreciate the site and SimilarWeb still has its disadvantages.

Only analyzing and checking significant website traffic

Even though SimilarWeb is a way of viewing any website traffic, it has limitations. Small sites with low traffic volume and just under three months of creation, SimilarWeb cannot give results if you’ve newly created a website for your business and want to evaluate the results. Unfortunately, SimilarWeb is not a website that you can rely on for estimation.

The actual figures are not correct.

You can only use SimilarWeb to make estimates, but the actual numbers can be very different; if you use the results for work reporting, you should use other tools to provide more accurate metrics.
